Hedi Slimane

Killer lines. Unexpected angles. Black-and-whites. Rock star sensibilities.

LXXII

ANONYMOUS PT II.

Did I mention Zulu & Zephyr? Did I mention the gaze.

There's something about product editorials such as this - there's an anonymity, a focus on the product, yes, but also an element of 'you could be this girl' and 'this could be your world' and 'this should be your world' and 'you should be this girl' that is both incredibly artistic, truly captivating, and very effective marketing.

But you can't just construct this kind of gaze, if it is contrived it doesn't work. These photographs simply work in their simplicity, their effortlessness, and that Australian nonchalance I mentioned.

This could be me. This could be my world.

ANONYMOUS.

A little bit in love with these shots by Purienne for Zulu & Zephyr's new collection. The emerging label impressively toes the line between tropical luxe and Australian nonchalance - but its the way that Purienne shoots women and the gaze that really gets me.

A running theme in my consciousness right now. You'll see.

LXVII

There are the colours that you dream of and there are the colours you couldn't dream up if you tried. They were here before you and you'll be long gone before their splendour fades.

But now that they've known you - and it is that way round, no mistake my dear - they take up residence in the west wing of your conscience and, boy, do they displace the cobwebs in those eaves!

There are the places that you dream of and there are the places you couldn't dream up if you tried. They were here before you and you'll be long gone before their splendour fades...

Marrakech.

LIX

Lie to me.

If I told you I was a no regrets kinda gal… that would be a lie. If I said I was pretty happy-go-lucky, also a lie. If I said I was carefree, or didn’t give a damn what other people thought of me, or was perfectly content within myself – all lies. But I do tell you those things. What I wear, the way I smile, my mannerisms around total strangers, the way I dismiss your remarks or ignore your stares. I’m telling you a story about myself that I know not to be true. And its not just me – the world is a liar. Because that’s what we’re taught to do and that’s how we’re taught to be, and somewhere along the way every single one of us just joins in the game of lies that we don’t even know we’re playing anymore. This is what makes the world go round. This is what makes statistics soar – depression, racism, insecurity, suicide, intolerance, repression, abuse, self harm, bullying, hate mail, pain, suffering, neglect, misfortune. Welcome to the world we live in. Welcome to the world you live.

L

In honour of post #50 - one of my all time favourite photographers Akila Berjaoui.

Some home-turf shots from this usually more European-Summer-dreams inclined Aussie talent.

Hang my locket around your neck, wear my ring on your finger. Love is invincible facing danger and death. Passion laughs at the terrors of hell. The fire of love stops at nothing - it sweeps everything before it. Flood waters can't drown love, torrents of rain can't put it out. Love can't be bought, love can't be sold - it's not to be found in the marketplace.
